The gardening year
The gardening year turns on frost: sow and plant in spring, water and harvest in summer, tidy and plant bulbs in autumn, plan and protect in winter. Tender plants wait for the last spring frost.

Spring gardening jobs
Sow under cover and harden off before planting out, hold your nerve on tender plants until the frosts are gone, start mowing with a high blade, and stay on top of weeds and slugs.

Summer gardening jobs
Water wisely, deadhead and feed to keep flowers and crops coming, pick beans and courgettes often, and summer-prune trained apples and pears.

Autumn gardening jobs
Plant spring bulbs (tulips last, in November), get bare-root trees and shrubs in while dormant, lift dahlias after the first frost, and save your fallen leaves for leaf mould.

Winter gardening jobs
Winter-prune apples and pears while dormant (never stone fruit), plant bare-root when the soil is workable, protect pots from frost, force rhubarb, then clean up and plan for spring.
